Default Short session bait

Hi
New to the forum, so take it easy on me.
Over the past 10 years or so i have caught various carp from many waters
including Capesthorne (a few years back). due to being in full time work, wife and kids i only get to fish for short 8-12 hr day sessions. what i have found is that readymade (shelflife) boilies seemed to get a better response than freezer baits, one of my best sesions on Capesthorne was with Nutrabaits readymades where i caught 4 carp up to 24lb,
with my mate catching Moby, again on the nutrabaits readies.
My post is to really get your views on the old readymade / freezer bait scenario, shelflife baits now have a quite good food value and my personal
view is that if you are not on the "Going" bait, cant prebait on a regular basis, or dont know what works well on a chosen water then the best bet is to use higher attract baits.
will be back on capesthorne this season after a long break to try my theory out, probably blank good style!

personaly speaking i do prefer freezer baits (distinguishing though the difference between ready made and freezer would be quite hard as theoretically speaking they are al lready maded)

shelf life boilies i havent used for years (not counting pop ups) can remember the last time i snarred a bag!

for short sessions though i am only taking a small amount of boilie with me and looking at alternative baits (in which a few know what they are)

if your not on the going bait then i wouldnt worry about that! variety is the spice of life... I remember a time (on the top pool in January last year) i was using a certain moderators boilies, a far cry from the amount of B5 that has gone in there, and true to form after months of nothing, i had a run !! sadly though i lost it but it goes to show that a bait that fish have hardly seen before may be more tempting than the regular supply that usually goes in!

a 2nd scenario would be fishing the Blue Pool last last year in Berkshire, again with the formentioned moderators boilies, NEVER EVER seen before in that particluar lake, and i suceeded in nailing two fish as mentioned by IanB in another thread, if you follow the crowds....... lol

go with what you feel best, rather than shelling out £££ for a bait that the fish may have had enough off! dont ask me how we would knwo that though lol

Hi Caps,

Welcome to the forum mate, nice to have you on board.

It’s a subject we covered more than once in the past. My own views can be seen here: http://www.northwestcarp.co.uk/Carp-Articles/The-Help-Files/shelflife_v_fresh_bait.html but when all said and done it will come down to confidence I guess.

On a personal level I’m always more confident on a fresh bait that will release all it’s goodies quick-smart, though I know many who only ever fish readymade bait and seem to do well.

Hi ICAP, welcome to the monkeys.

You could have the best of both worlds and make your own, high attract bait. Freshness and attraction in 1 (sounds like me )

Thanks for the replies chaps, over the years when using freezer baits i do use the B5, i suppose if i am going to be concentrating on capesthorne this season then id better get to know you lot and find out whats best!?
Only joking, i dont jump onto someone elses hard work, i've always figured things out for myself, i think you get satisfaction from catching a carp on your own devised tactics.

having said that though if you see a group of fish waving their tails at you muching on few free offerings you wouldnt hesistate to creep down and place a bait amongst them

Welcome aboard matey, personally i like to use fresh baits as they are full of goodness and can be broken down by the fish alot quicker than ready mades, but i think you should always keep your options open, dont just use boillies, after all, alot of people who are on the lakes will be using boillies so the fish may get used to seeing them all the time, i love using particles i think the combinations of nuts, seeds, maize and corn can work almost everywhere and have great results on some places. I always have a fresh boillie on one of my rods but i think its good to experiment with one of the other rods. I'll be on capes myself this year mate, tight lines

Totally agree with the particles mate, never really used them for any length of time but know of other anglers who have hammered places on them. As you say theres lots of options.

Thumbs up

Welcome to the forum matey, for me its fresh bait for every session ,plus particle if it goes well on the water.I always carry my trusty pop ups and have a dabble in the dynamite ready mades now and again. Its a confidence thing for me,i've used the same bait company for years but for my last order I went halves on my usual amount of fusion and got some of M.B's snail and shell to try along side.

i use both the hbs bait i use is frozen and the mistral i use is shelf life and it has caught me the most in comparison to the frozens.on wyre they have never ever seen the mistral bait but thats what all my action has been on since i started fishing up there and its out fished on linnet and compstall so its true if they aint seen it before i think they are more likely to pick it up.
