Default prepairing peanuts

i was fishing a club water over the weekend when i saw a guy use peanuts strait from a packet onto a hair rig(like any bought in a shop or pub etc) i thought you had to properly prepare any type of nut before using them?

Yep, you should.

I think some use unprepared nuts on the hair as the theory is that the carp won’t get to eat them, though I would always use prepared nuts on the hair also. That or the guy was just plain lazy.

Rule of thumb for peanuts is soak for 12-18hrs, simmer for 25mins.

thanks julian,
i thought as much but wasn't sure, so next time i see him i'll point this out, though to be fair to him he fishes the lake fairly regular & its the first time i've noticed him using peanuts(may have been for himself but thought he would try it on a hair) even so its no excuse......

Another tip for peanuts is to only use human grade nuts as some poorer quality ones can be dangerous for the fish to eat, cant remember whether its bacterial or a fungal contamination that causes the problems.Had a shock when I used them for the first time they swell so much when prepaired

unprepared nut mean two things swollen guts of fish and intestinal problem but cheap nuts are carcagenic there are plenty of baits that will catch you more

If it were me...I wouldnt worry about using them straight from the pack on the hair, but if introducing freebies I would use ones that had been soaked.

Im not saying its ok to use nuts from the bag but i think they might not swell best bet is to try them in a soak first and see what happens.I dont use peanuts at all there too dodgy were the carps welfare is concerned.

as long as any freebies are prepared properly, then theres no problem!

anything on the hairs not goin2 get eaten! think about a very bouyant bait, on your hair and you wanted to weigh it down, would you put leadwire in it from your leadcore! top anglers do it all the time and no-one bats an eyelid !

They'd taste better and hold more attraction for the carp would they not if they were boiled, probably because they start to ferment
