Question Winter Bait Choice ?

im going fishing for 3 days in November and i cant decide which boilies to get and its driving me mad !!

i want to try something a little different from the norm, i didnt want a mainline bait however they have proven very effective at the water im going to in the past

anyone got any suggestions ?

ive used Trigga there before when it first came out, and it worked but not as well as Activ-8 did........but, i dont want to use the most popular bait as everyone is probably on it, id rather use something they wont have seen much of

Richworth Tutti's if its cold enough, frozens of course.

Or if you feeling brave and wanna work for em get a gallon of maggots, cost wise it'll only be about a kilo of boilies worth but more effective even if you do get pestered by those 'other species'...

If fish are being caught on mainline bait you should at least take a bit with you so at least you know you've got some bait which the carp in the lake recognise and like. Agree with Nev on the maggots as they are a great winter bait as long as there isn't loads of nuisance fish in the lake.

Got to agree, snail and shell

Just to send the thread off track a little, when does winter fishing start in most peoples eyes? For me it's when we've had hard frosty nights/mornings, which seems to be getting later each year. Mid/late December to March are what I consider winter.

which is the best mainline winter bait then ?

do they still make winter-8 or should i go for grange

its hard to make a choice because i dont think its going to be proper winter, its just going to be cold, so im wondering if i need to stay away from a fishmeal or not

i was thinking of Solar FrostByte or Winter Secret (dont like the dayglo pink though) or maybe the top banana as that isnt fishmeal based and is supposed to be a good short session bait with instant attraction

also, there is the shellfish B5 which is what i was originally going to use

there are too many baits on the market at the moment, its a nightmare

B5 is an excellent bait but the oil content is just a bit too high for my liking in winter. Perfectly fine if you can get it right infront of them but like to edge my bets a bit in winter and try and draw them from distance as well.

I would go for a high leakage yet digestible winter bait with a very soluble flavour in it. This allows the flavour out easily, the flavour then dispe****s well and if its right in front of them they can eat a few without getting full up.

IMO the active maple8 is a brilliant cold water bait
Especially in the 10mm

The B5 is available in a 'winterised' version, reduced oil content if i remember correctly. The creamseed csm has a very good track record in the colder months, according to Senor Wilmott it gets better as it gets colder.
Also available in Pineapple csm for those who favour erm, pineapple.

Winter Secret is worth a look-it has been formulated with a high wheatgerm content, which fish find easy to digest in cold conditions-this has been passed on from koi rearers so fish will be less 'bunged up' after a feed...thats the theory anyway.

Grange-steer clear, its not what it used to be due to Mainline not shifting the amounts they used to-therefore no longer cost effective to import the higher quality ingredients that used to make up the bait composition.Maple 8 is by far the one to look at for cold weather,I'd go as far as saying its Mainlines' jewel in their fast growing bait crown!

This winter I will be mostly using hair rigged goldfish flakes though-and remember...you heard it HERE first,right....
