Ok guys i know a little bit about bait an the contents {not much tho lol } and over the years i have seen certain anglers use either on of the above .... Default protein or fishmeal...?

I have not really done a major winter campaign but know others that have and continued to use their 'summer' fishmeals with success.....I think that most just simply ditch the inclusion of fish oils if continuing to fish a fishmeal in the winter.I think if plenty of the bait has gone in througout the warmer months then the fish will still have it when they do decide to feed when it gets colder.I have occasionally fished in the winter(planning to do much more this year) and just used the summer fishmeal and still caught. Birdfoods/milk protein baits are a bit looser in texture and therefore probably leak flavours/attractants a bit better in the winter and this is why some anglers prefer them. However on some waters like the Yateley complex fishmeals have been used that extensively that the fish seem to regard them as a valid food source all year round.Having read Terry Hearns 'In pursuit', I know that he used fishmeals all year round on there and had some terrific results.

I don't know too much about bait and trust the advice of those that do, Mick tells me to stick with snail and shell throughout and I should catch. I stuck with it last year and caught, hopefully this winter will be no different

Default the protien game.

Oh come on steve don't be shy! what would old fred think! Seriously this is quiet an interesting post regarding milk protiens and fishmeal baits and one that couldl take up an whole days writing! for the record thougth i've had good results on fishmeals come the back end but only on waters where they are well established and have been heavilly baited through out the sumer.
this subject has so many variables it could be talked about for quiet some time. interestingly enought though one of the best winter boilies i've used is dynamites frozen tiger nut bait which is a carbohidrate, cerial and nut based, protien content wise it has very little in it but it is highly digestable, breaks down quick and most important is very attractive.
My all time favourite summer fishmeals that work in the winter are either Premier baits Aminos with betaine, cream stim or Mike willmotts b5 both of which have caught loads of fish over the years.

So many vairables.

Protiens maybe better in winter if you are heavily baiting as they can be easier to digest for the carp in cold water temperatures. But if you are just using singles or a few baits then it really doesnt matter about the base. It then comes down to solubilty and dispearsel of flavurs and stimulants into the water. The base that your winter flavour on can be majoraly important! Most reconised winter flavours are good not because of the pineapple or tutti frutti but more down to the flavours base, and its ability to spread through even nearly frozen water.

So for heavy baiting the milk protiens are probably the way to go in winter, but for most of use where winter fishing is singles and stringers stick with whatever base and use a punchy flavouring!

Just typing anf thinking again, but if your fishmeal has been going in all winter and you think the fish are a bit active then this is a good way to go. As if they come across it they will reconise it straight away as tasty food. The punchy singles help you search out more motionless fish.
