i was down chattin to deano at a local water tonite and he fired a few mixers into the middle 'ish part of the lake an sure enough up they came . Now i know a little bit about this water an have had a few of the top but from the margins , i use bread for almost most of my surface fishin/stalkin ...free lined no control etc . now if i need to get a lill distance i just up the size of the bread{i have used a whole round b4 lol } wich is attached by a bait band, {for extra weight}. no finece, crude as ya like an it works for me , yet when talkin to dean he nearly always uses mixers! see i belive the size of the bread not only hide the hook better but also frustrates that carp that much it slurps like it life depends on it lol lol you get my drift lol
so the question is what do you prefer an why ? and what setup do you use ? smokey

I would use a fake mixer as they look the same and have a shot in the bottom to ensure your hook stays on top .However the balancing shot along with a size 6 sinks it have to use a size 10 .

Mixers for me 99% of the time, with a small, fake rubber mixer on the hook. As for the freebies I tend to mix small pond pellets with the mixers, about 70% pond pellets to 30% chummies. If I need to get any distance I just spod 'em out with a pocket rocket. The carp get pre-occupied on the pellets as their so small, they just cant get enough of them, anything else in the way, ie chummie/hookbait goes down without caution.
As for set up, I use a bubble float as a controller. I like these because you can adjust their weight by adding water. When their empty they hardly make a splash if feathered down on the cast, however, fill them up and you can cast a fair distance. The bubble float is then semi fixed to a ring with a piece of silicone to which about 2 1/2 - 3 foot of 10lb double strength is used for a hooklink. The bait is mounted on a size 8 -10 Drennan Super Specialist hook.

blue i like the idea of pond pellets mixed in with your mixers ..simple but effective , i have used controlers an bubble floats many a time but for sum reason prefer the bread ....??? looks like its just a mixer thing !!!lol
the fake mixers are mint bt i used to find that only one in every pack suited what i needed ??? Sods law id always lose it when the realy got goin lol how about the beach cast method anyone used that ...havnt myself but my mate cliff always use to use it when we fished , he had a few fish usin that .....but its does need a lillte room to be used not realy your day ticket tatic lol smokey

Bread,Bread and more Bread!!!
Had all my best fish on Bread inc. my PB Can be a problem keeping it on the hook at times but i don't have a problem with distance as i use a bubble float and i've found that the carp prefer bread to anything else! All depends on the venue i suppose.

I hate fake mixers for one. They just arent as good as the real ones, find fish reject them far more.
Mixers, cat biscuits, pellets.....mix it up and give it to them. Mixer on the hook or hair every time though.

as you already know its mixers for me...on as light/fine hooklength as is reasonably possible, taking snags and fish size into consideration. Then its a fake mixer on a size 6 super specialist...no probs about hook size as these are a light hook any way and the fake mixer ensures that it sits up out of the water
I just love mixers as you can really get the fish preoccupied on them then they will be ready for a cast...then hopefully you're in

mixers fed into the swim for me .............but nearly always a rubber mixer on the hook............i agree with you joephus that at times fish can eject the mixer quite easily but by counterbalancing the bouyancy with shot, the near perfect balance can be obtained............i adapt my rubber mixers to take more shot than they are able to when you buy them !
as for controllers, the drennan clear ones are exceLlent and come in huge sizes for long range..............or an old favourite trick i use when surface fishing to snags is to get some standard white candles , pull out the wick and cut em into lengths...................feed line through them and fit in position with a couple of lightly pinched on shot !
