Default toughening up bait

I used to use salt water mussels in my marginal fishing years back, i used to hook them onto a d.rig and pva tape them on , to keep them from falling off on the cast. The main problem was that you couldnt cast them more than an underarm swing.......................has anybody any ideas on how i can toughen them up so they can be cast ? Would salting them be efficient and safe for the fish if they were to eat them ?

Use cockles carp love em but tench also love em or bind the mussels on like the sea anglers do with that single strand thin elastic it cuts into the bait out of sight or feel but holds it on a treat .The sea lads can cast a long long way with the bait tied up like that

Phil

Try a PVA bag, it will protect on casting - what ever the distance. Have used on shrimps/prawns with success

Just drop them on the hair rigs into the top pool margins, no need to be casting them about mate.

you could bind them on above and onto the hook with bait elastic sell it in the sea fishing section.designed for holding soft baits in place on the cast, not used it with mussles but used it with other similar soft baits.positive it would work.could fit 2,3,or 4 mussles on this way.
