do away with the preservative and just buy a couple of air dry sacks. air dry your baits and hang em in the sacks. then add water to em in a bucket on the bank.

dont see why youd want to use perservative over air drying tbh.

If you are looking to use them in France then simply bin all the previous information and buy some baits from Mistral. I have caught hundreds of fish in France on these baits including at least 60 over 30lb, several 40s and a 50. I can highly recommend Rosehip Isotonic in 10, 15 and 20mm. The Euro range have also caught really well and cost less than £50 for 10 kilos. The 11mm dusted halibut pellets have also caught me some superb fish to over 40lb when chats are not a problem. I usually mesh these in stocking to ensure they last the night. The Rosehip moist method pellets make excellent sticks and produced some fantastic results when combined with double 10mm baits on Millstone last year. None of the Mistral range need airdrying etc.

Cheers Wooly,

Seems your a big fan of Mistral .

I see what your saying, their cheap enough, will last and are proven but 'the buzz' I get from fishing is from using baits ive made myself from scratch from choosing ingredients to additives, to flavours. So buying baits (although much more convenient) would remove some of the achievement for me .

Going back to preservatives ......If you use Whey gel and Egg albumin instead of egg, then would you still need preservatives

TBH - I might just air-dry them and use them air-dried rather than re-hydrate them (as I wont be able to use them in PVA bags). Is this ok? Also, when air-drying them, do people use higher flavour levels as the flavour dries out slightly?

Just give em an hour or so to re-hydrate and then remove them from the liquid and let them dry off a bit or towel them dry for use in a pva bags

Jesus christ....
  • Doesn't really answer the Whey gel and Egg Albumen question.
  • Doesn't answer the flavour increase question.
  • Doesn't answer whether using air-dried baits are fine as they are without the need to re-hydrate them.
  • Wanted to see what other people's opinions were.
  • I DID read your reply and thank you.
Any more **** from you?

If you're still at the stage of experimenting with baits and are not too sure on flavour levels or what to do to preserve them for a trip abroad then take Wooly's advice and take a proven bait.

I do know what flavour levels etc etc I use in my baits and have caught fish on them.

My question (as ive never air-dried baits before, always used them straight from the freezer) was whether people increase the flavour levels slightly to counter the fact that when air-drying baits the flavour levels would ware out (I presume).

You'd be surprised how much the flavour etc leaks out once the boilies rehydrate, you haven't said when your trip is planned for so make a small batch and air dry them, then try them out.

I bought air dried solar and nash boilies from the bait company 4 yrs ago for a trip, my mate still uses them as single hookbaits or in a bag with pellets and has caught as many fish on these as fresh baits (including 6 from Capes main lake this year to 28lb ). They are rock hard and to me smell of nothing at all until they are soaked.

So they will go rock hard and basically smell of nothing until you re-hydrate them and if you do as Thing1 said and re-hydrate them and let them dry off abit, they are basically like fresh baits again .

Cheers,

Thats what ill be doing.

Trip is for Spain in 9 weeks.

They will also go a little smaller as they dry out, so if you make 18mm's they will look more like 16mm's when you come to use them.
And will be much lighter as all of the moisture has gone, so if you use a catapult or cobra stick you won't get them out as far as you would normally do.

Otherwise from my own experience of using air dried baits and drying my own then pretty much what you have said is what I have found.

If there's a fruit and veg market near you go and ask nicely for a couple of the large paper sacks they use to put them in.

For cryin out loud City! You of all people should know where the search button is. I don`t know where you are going with this thred but as you very well know there has been reams and reams written on this forum about air drying bait.

If you feel you know so much why do you ask so many questions about bait?
