Putting an added bend on the eye of your hook so that the hook flips easier.

Its not a silly question if you dont know the answer.

The black tubing in the rigs below has been used to create a 'line aligner rig' (bottom picture) whereby the line is coming out of the tubing at an angle which in theory helps turn the hook into the carps mouth and improve hooking, the other picture it has been used to extend the shank of the hook. It also protects the knot and depending on where you position the tubing down the hook shank, determines the amount of flexibility the hair has from the knot on the eye of the hook.

The tubing will only do its job if the hooklink is tightened up against the lead.If the fish choose to not move then the hooklink remains slack so the tubing cannot help turn the hook.Personally i would rather have it on although a lot of top carpers reckon it doesnt aid hooking in any way.I do find the last statement hard to beleive and think the anglers are too lazy to put it on.
