all depends on the lake your fishing and the stock density.you would`nt go far wrong in just fishing for a bite at a time till you get an understanding of the water.obviously if you are catching fish fishing for a bite at a time keep topping up your swim after every fish.

my personal opinion/preferance
winter a days fishing i get through about half a kilo max usually just use bags and a few free baits out around my hookbait in summer a differnt story all together depending were im fishing up to about 10kg of parts a session with a few K of boiles but never usually less that a kilo of boiles. when in france in a week i usually get through about 150 kg of parts and 20K of boiles due to were i go you have the advantage of a boat so bait aplication is easy in large quantity

i got through half kilo of boilies and 4kilo of hemp and crushed maize on saturday afternoon, for 6 runs from a margin spot 4ft deep. unfortunately i lost 3. this is from a water that nobody really fishes the margins from either.. its all whack it out and hope for the best

One water i have fished a lot used to have a very positive reaction to huge amounts of bait being put in then cast onto the big bed of bait sit back and wait .Usually had a run or 2 within an hour then it could switch on or switch off ,99 times out of 100 with a big bed of bait in the summer it switched on .Eventually the Carp wised up and avoided big beds of bait its all trial and error what works in one swim may/will not work in another & if one method works for you does not mean it will work for me or anyone else as there are subtle differences in the way we put our rigs together or make up a spod/particle mix . The best anyone can do for you is point you in the right direction and give you some tips on what rigs and/or bait may work but the rest including the fine tuning is up to you . Take onboard whatever someone tells you you may never use all of their tip but you may modify it or uise a bit of what they tell you.
However if they tell you not to use a certain method and you are anything like i used tobe you will try it purely out of the wish to prove them wrong i never have yet . Classic example being when a certain highly respected carp angler told me back in 1977 or 78 that there was no point in using floating crust on a certain venue as you wont catch any carp .I still went ahead and tried it and i caught a nice plump 2 or 3lb mallard

I see alot of you are using alot more than i ever do... i lot of the time i am on my regular water i use a feeder on one rod and pva on the other with pellet and crushed boilie and this seemed to work but now it is winter i tend not to use the feeder... i normally throw out a few of my hookbait weither it boilies or what not in the area of my bait but no where near a kilo....

being different works though Rainey. you will find that some places will fish well with single hookbaits, pva bags, large beds, particle, boilies only approaches, my advise would be to have different rigs and set ups so your covering as many eventualites at any one time.
i know that i can catch out of the margins on most waters, so i will bait a margin spot. however i do tend to whack one out with a pop up and pva bag or little stringer.. being as ur a newcomer to angling, and picking things up every day, try not to become stale in ur approach to baiting. i know some people that stick to pva bags every session cast out and leave it, when they blank they blame the fish for not feeding etc... experiment with different amounts.. u will find a winning formula and you wont be afraid to change it if you feel things arent quite right
