Default The random hints and tips thread

I'm sure everyone has loads of little hints and tips that they could pass on about fishing. Any 'hints and tips' thread about watercraft, rigs, tackle, bait etc. could be endless.

So, I thought it might be fun to have a hints and tips thread for all that slightly quirky advice that you might not otherwise pass on.

The rules are simple - anything you might expect to read in a book or magazine is not allowed. The more leftfield the better, but all tips must be somehow related to fishing!

Mike.

I'll start off:

If you end up with dirty and smelly hands after a day's fishing (or any other activity that makes your hands smell) give your hands a good wash with shaving gel. One wash = smell gone. It's brilliant stuff!

If you ever manage to fall into a dirty lake, or eat your butties with dirty hands drink a can of coke (full fat coca-cola - no own brand or diet stuff). Coke is as close to domestos as you can get and will kill the vast majority of any germs you swallow.

Always have some dog biscuits with you - no matter what the conditions. You'd be amazed at how often you'll come across carp in the upper layers when you least expect it - even in the dead of winter.

you beat me to it....lol... you will be surprised how applying doggies on a regular basis can come up trumps....especially if no one else is doing it...last year I did very well on a lake doing just this no matter what the weather...!!! took a nice low 20 this time last year off the top...most people wouldnt dream of doing the mixers now...but like J says never say never....

Never thought I would write these words.

It is good advice, but Julian Cundiff used it so often that it ended more over used and worn out than one of his girlfriends.

If it aint bust don't fix it!

Another one of my own is:

To keep warm in your sleeping bag in winter take off your warm outer clothing. Bit of a strange one this and results are variable from bag to bag. If you get into your bag wearing thick coats thermal suits etc often the bag loses much of its thermal qualities. This is because you lose the air gap that is intended to warm up from your body heat. I sleep in jeans and T-shirt even in the coldest weather and I am always nice and toasty. It is a bit of a leap of faith because initially it does feel colder but once the bag warms up you actually end up warmer.

That is until you need a pee or get a run.

I remember once sitting on my bed chair, adrenalin pumping daft grin on my face, after catching a fish on a very frosty night. Upon crossing my legs I caught sight of a very strange silhouette that looked nothing like what my foot should look like. Padding around in my socks while playing, landing, weighing the fish, etc my feet were naturally very cold, but I was gob smacked to find a load of leaves literally frozen to my socks.

Always keep a packet of baby or anti bacterial wipes ( pref both ) in your rucksack/box/car .To keep your hands clean (Weils disease etc ) and also far better than bog roll for keeping delicate areas clean etc though bog roll is best used afterwards to keep things dry
