I'd stick with shelf baits personally as they offer great flexibility. When learning the ropes and trying a few different venues, it can be difficult to judge how much bait to use. In my opinion freezer baits are a little less flexible in this respect and are a bit more hassle to use, particularly given that we're approaching winter and you might find you're using very few baits in a session.

Buy a couple of bags of shelf baits from a mainstream manufacturer. Rather than buy one of every colour/flavour available try going for just 2 or 3 flavours. Maybe a savoury one and a sweet one, a bland coloured one and a brighter one perhaps?

Armed with a few boilies to try you'll soon start getting a few runs. Rather than getting too hung up on the bait minefield and trying different baits every week, stick with a few boilies and spend your efforts concentrating on watercraft and techniques. It'll pay dividends in the long run.

Mike.

Hi

personally I would go for frezzer baits as I think they are far better quality that shelf life but that might just be a confiedence thing ( spelling not my great point after a curry and a few )

Thumbs up

Bob on advice there Kermit Try not to run before you can walk, keep it simple. As winter approaches, depending on your venue, a birdseed/fruity ready made bait will be a good starting point mate. Most ready made baits nowadays are very digestible for the carp, and often out fish a freezer bait in the colder months..

Dynamite readymade tigernut boilies are a cracking bait...

whilst on the subject of the 'shop brought' ready mades.. whilst they are very pleasing on the eye and the fish do like them.. once they got your confidence.. and you are catching.. try and source an alternative provider of that boilie.. as whilst being easy on the fish they aint that easy on your pocket lol... £10 - £11 a KG is a lot of dough... so unless your using very few it could prove costly

I feel we are somewhat cheating the lad without recommending Dynamites Spicy Shrimp and Prawn fishmeals if recommending shelf lifes, simply awesome bait and the Squid and Octopus arnt bad either

Where is Monster Persuit which P1sses on Squid and scopex

Mainline-Grange and Active8

And no Nutrabaits!

Also if you want to stick to a good quality bait first, stay away from shelf life!

Hi

I have to agree with the above even if you are a newbie, dont go for the shelf life

Just break a shelf life boile in half then break a defrosted boile

definately freezer baits, ive no confidence in shelf lifes full of nasty preservatives.

Buy one good quality bait and dont swap around or you will not build confidence in it. Start catching on a bait consistantly and your confidence in it will rise and you can then forget bait and concentrate on whats really important like putting it near some carp.

For me its B5 and has been for many years I buy direct from essential, stocking up when he has the winter deals on (£7.50 instead of £10 a kilo)

Another one id be happy on is ccmoores xxx. But there are loads of others probably equally as good.
