Default rod tips in the water?

Hi

I have returned to this carping lark yet again after a few years rest

Why is it now people have there rods about a foot in the water

I can understand why on big meres where there are boats and skiers but why on flat calm waters?

sorry if its a stupid question, but I have got a few to ask

thanks john

its lowers the angles of the line, if your rod tips are closer to the deck of the lake more mainline should be pinned down.
don't think it looks that tartish tho, rod tips 2mm above the lakes surface looks sexy

So its instead of using them old back leads?

Is that the only reason?

I think they look good perfectly level with the water

I will put them up as far as necessary when fishing over weed

i had mine pointing at the sky (well facing upwards) whilst fishing 95yards out last week... gave me better indication compared to when i had them slightly above the water.. reason being there was a pretty sharp tow on the lake going from right to left and caused no end of bows in line etc...

i think (as in any case) you need to adopt your set up to the state of affairs on the lake...

i think its crazy to put your tips in the water personally as birds can knock them but the main reason is you no you have a take and not just a knock by watching your tips also if you can see the angle of your line entering the water if a fish arcs it may not indicate on your alarm but you will notice it visually

Is that the last foot of the rod in the water, or the tip a foot below the surface?

It stops swallows etc. hitting ther line in the daytime, and stops bats hitting the line at night.
It may also give increased indication(is that really necessary?) if the line is pointing directly at the lead and is not at an angle from the rod tip.
It is an alternative to using backleads, as previously stated.... Backleads detract from the feel and fight of playing fish....trust me.

Having rod rings under water increases the chance of water ingress under the lacquer/whippings, resulting in white marks around the rings.

Okay, could be right, it may just be a tarty thing.

Hi Manager

"Is that the last foot of the rod in the water, or the tip a foot below the surface?"

if they had the last foot in the water, they would have nowt to get hold of

yes, its the rod tips plus another 12 inches that the majority of anglers nowadays seem to have stuck in the water.

Just wondered why.

I think its been answered

thanks guys

totally agree m8 , different situations and waters defo require different tactics , i think its wrong to have just one fixed way of doing things .

Ii'm with Chesh. You'd be surprised how much your line can move with nothing registering on your alarm/bobbin. On twitchy takes, watching the rod tip and the line between the tip and water is very useful indeed!

However, if there is a genuine need to sink the tips (i.e. to avoid birdlife) then I've no problems in dunking them a bit.

Mike.
