Another tip, many weeds grow upwards towards sunlight, but as it goes darker at night the weed falls back to the bottom. This can completely bury your hookbait which is not ideal. imo
So, if fishing overnight, re-cast as late as possible before it is dark, so that your bait lies on top of the weed...............unless you like it buried.

good tip there manger but whats your thoughts about just casting straight into the weed ? and allowing the hook bait to become coverd as alot of angler i know and have read about dont realy care as their tought are if the carp whats the bait they will rip the weed apart to get to it ?

there was an article 2 months ago in carp world , cant remember who pend it but the jist of of the article was that this perticular angler would always turn up , marker for a clean spot , present the bait and wait .... now he said his catcher were regular but nowt special , then he deside to PUB CHUCK ...ahh that was the name of the article lol ...anyways he started to just cast at showing fish everytime he saw one day/night .... he then went onto to say that the lake was very weed but after baggin more fish by doin the pub chuck he came to the conclusion that he didnt care what the lake bed was like weed or no weed he still caught ??? i know this will mainly come down to confidence but whats your thoughts ?

1 thing i've used quite abit on weedy lakes is budgie sand, u can pick it up with aniseed flavouring, but i've found just average budgie sand works well.
fill a doubled up ( depending on the strength of ur bags ) pva bag, with budgie sand 1/2 full, tip bag onto its side so the sand is on the bottom, now stick some pellets on top of the sand, then push your hook bait down ontop of this then fill the rest with pellets. an tie up.
the idea is that with the weight of the sand it will push through the thickest of weed, straight to the bottom. then when the bag disolves the sand will push any bottom weed down, hopefully. and the pellets an hook bait will be on top of the sand.

i used this early on last year on bantons, whilst people where leading about for clear spots, i was chucking it into the weed where afew fish where held up. an had 3 fish out.

i agree with smokey, an his pub chuck idea. by not worrying to much about whats on the lake bed, an chucking to showing fish, or areas of weed where the fish are held up, then you should catch them.
as smokey said tho, it all about having the confidence to do it.

Default weed

set your marker up with a boom on the lead of say 6inches.If it pops up ok then you know the weed is not much deeper than this and is not too bad. Weed can be very deceiving especially when trying to ascertain its length and severity with a rig and lead on.
Weed of just a few inches can appear to be solid until you put a marker on it. Just play about with the marker and you will build up a picture in your minds eye. If the weeds not much deeper than 6 inches I have done ok with a 2 inch chod, and even when I have found thicker weed I have still got pick ups with this setup.

Fish will feed really hard in weed and its not something to be afraid of.If you use the chod set your top bead at least 18 inches up the leader, cast in then tighten up very slowly allowing the leader to cut its way through the weed thus aiding presentation.

Trust me if theres natural in the weed get a rig in there you will be pleasantly surprised(thats what I have found on one water at least)

I like to find a shadey tree or atleast a shaded area as the weed doesn't grow there.Photosynthisis and that.
Or you could do as they do on Boandry get a boat tip aload of stone and gravel and make your own bar. Just a bit of a pain when there going out in the boat everytime they want to put a rig out.

When you reel the stuff back you will have a good idea of how long it is. Use a marker float (keep lengthening the tail) or get up a tree and look.
In my experience it is better to fish in it but step up your gear and above all dont fish it to the detriment of the fish, tight lines.

i know many will differ but i rarely use a marker rod anymore. i prefer to feel the lead down to the bottom or, if the lake waters clear enough, get up a tree and have a look where the fish are and what the bottoms like. you'll be able to soon tell the difference in fishable weed to the thick unfishable stuff.fishing in weeds not a problem if you use the right end tackle set up. i use light leads, feathering down the cast, and blatant pop ups( 2"-3" off the bottom) with a peice of foam masking the hook. as long as your on fish and confident in what your doing you'll be ok.
