If, however, you were using an inoffensive item that you legitimately had to hand to 'defend yourself' then you stand a much better chance of not getting into trouble. Surely we all carry heavy and sturdy banksticks with us for rocky ground and I know I certainly require quite a very large mallet indeed to get my bivvy pegs in . You've just got to think laterally.
I also carry a knife with me for chopping baits up (and a million other uses). However, if anyone is stupid enough to consider that drawing a knife on someone is even close to being a good idea then, in my opinion, you need your head looking into (an arrangement that may very well occur if you do chose to wave knives at hoodlums).

All obvious stuff Mike...but thanks anyhow...
That just shows how us fisherman can go about our business legally tooled up on a scale that would make Rambo envious. If I was a thief I would not target an angler!!!
That air pistol/rifle you carry for shooting vermin or the odd rabbit for the pot, the 9" Bowie knife legitimately used for chopping up the odd stick of pepperami, the 3kg Stainless bankstick etc (by the way my Steve Neville FO range is still up for sale)
ps Don't forget some CS gas/pepper spray/mace...the evidence will be well evaporated by the time the Old Bill/Paramedics arrive to treat our unfortunate thief...
