Well whats the verdict on the current carp mags that are out there After reading the 'books' thread I thought it would be good to hear everybodies views on the mags. Personally I think that a lot of them are churning the same sort of thing out month after month...but I still can't help buying em I am probably afraid of missing out on something. As boxer said in the 'books'thread books hold there value and for me I think I have learned a lot from books but thats not to say the mags haven't occasionally given me ideas. So nows your chance to praise or criticise the mags

i think the top has been blown off with these carp mags, as you quite rightly say they are all churning out the same stuff. and promoting the latest must haves which in turn makes us part with our hard earned!
i have now started picking up a copy ot the old faithfull angling times when i go to tesco with the missus, haveing a flick while i push the trolly about

dont you read it then put it back andy ?
magazines are expensive adverts........... why do we have to pay for them ? even the articles are one long advert for either the tackle mentioned or the venue being fished !

Totally agree, its all the same old same old.
They're great if your new to carp fishing and need to know how to spod or tie a hair rig etc. That said, I'm not saying i know it all, far from it, but they do seem to be doing the same features every month.
I'm sick of opening up a carp mag and seeing a close up of a rig with a blurred out shot of Derek Ritchie's irritating face behind it!
The only mag i get is Carpworld, but even that's getting a bit tedious now, it just seems to be a diary for the who's who of carp fishing. It used print articles from anyone up and down the country who's wrote a decent article about their fishing, which gave people a chance to see their writing in print. Doesn't seem to do it anymore.
Much prefer a book now.

Couldn't agree more, not seen anything different for a long time and sick of seeing the same people promoting the same things.
Think that they are now too commercial and impresson I get is that the bigger companies and their sponsored anglers are out to line each others pockets. The profiles of the anglers in one of the mags always makes me laugh, Nick Heuller master tactician and inventor of the stick, and Ian Poole famous for using pva bags. Even these guys must cringe when they read it.
Best one for me currently, Improve Your Coarse Fishing since give a good general view of specimen angling over variety of species and tackle.

The only one I get is Carpworld and your right there blue it's becoming a monthly yarn or yawn for Tim Paisley and his mates
I think your far better off on this forum checking out what the real word on the bank is
I'm not too fussed about whats going on down conningbrook I need to know whats happening on the top pool or the Bridgewater Canal
And tackle reviews as well I'd prefer to know what the lads are actually buying on the forum than buying something off the back of a review done by somebody who's getting either paid to use the gear or getting it for nowt
I'll be saving my £4.30 this month

i don't why i still buy em but i do occasionaly

I buy 2 magazines, Carpworld and Crafty carper
Carpworld is worth it just to read the articals by Chilly, Frank Warkick, Terry Hearn and just lately Gaz Farnham. I like Crafty because they have a few interesting bits by Frank Warwick in them.
What do you guy's want from a mag?

i gave up on the mags a long time ago, i can remember buying carpworld back in the very late 80's and early 90's . back then i used to read each one several times over but by the time i sacked the mag in 2000 i only ever read half of each issue and i had a difficult time reading that much they'd become so tedious
if your a beginner to carping the mags are great, your hungry for information and they provide it, as you move on and learn more you tend to see the same things over and over again and eventually there comes a time when you wonder if buying them is worthwhile. thankfully you can still keep up to date with happenings around the carp world via forums these days and i've no regrets about cancelling my subscriptions, its been 6 years since i bought a mag and i don't think i've missed them one bit, the money i saved not buying them has pretty much payed my internet connection each month as well lol

I still sadly buy the occational mag when im bored but frankly I always regret it, they are crap.
Carpworld in its first couple of years was good, articles by unknowns on their local waters etc. Now who wants to read Chillys latest trip out Yawn, Julian Cundiff?? move on man.
The only occational articles of interest are by the likes of Gaz Farnam as they are often on NW waters
expensive way to read lots of adverts and dont forget the pva baggin!

ye the mags have gone crap with the same old stuff and adverts but there is some very good anglers who write in them and some not so good anglers who write in them.
Im not naming people but i know a couple of guys who do articles in them and they really think they are some one, mentioning what wonder bait they caught the last carp on to gain some extra bait when infact they caught it on a tiger nut.
Advising what end tackle to use, then when they move companys they want you to swap to them.
But the scary thing is,is that the new carp anglers are being brought up to use the so called wonder bait, rods etc.
I think it was in Martin Clarkes book where he said the very best carp anglers stay hidden.
My best advice would be spend as much time on the bank watching the water and thats how you will learn.

Well lads it seems that the mags have got a big I think I'm just going to save my money and buy the odd book or another kilo of bait from now on. when I first started carping I learned most from other anglers by either asking or being shown or WATCHING I agree with the comments about Carpworld as when I first started 15 years ago it was a cracking read informative and entertaining I haven't read it for a while but last time I did I wasn't too impressed Carpworld and the other mags should also give the average angler some print as well like they used to as their articles were often the most enjoyable....they should also pay em a few quid for their troubles as well as an incentive to write more articles even if the payment was in bits of tackle as without the influx of new minds the carp angling literature in general will just stagnate. There is probably some very proficient carp anglers out there whose ideas and results would be very insightul and provide impetus for further discussion from some of the good well known and well published anglers, they may also even turn some theories/common practices on their heads with their findings/results. All this however is pure conjecture at the moment as the 'average' angler just doesn't get the chance to air their views and back them up in print with results because the editors of the mags have never heard of them. Well thats probably enough from me sorry for rambling on a bit

there good but they mainly show you the same thing over and over again. or they show you some weird looking rig that looks like it has come from another planet.

Have any of you lads read the new mag carp addict. It's a really good read hardly any ad's an some good northen coverage. As for the rest of em why would i or any other normal carp angler want to know what is going on on Raduta,
The Orient, The Mangrove or any other waters that i'll probably never get the chance too fish.

Dont get on with Carp addict and i dont know why, just dont overally like it.
Carpology is ok for an easy read.
Carpworld did have some nice articales in it, and chillys and chris balls are still good. Chris balls are the ones making me buy it right now.
Big carp - has some awesome photos and really nice long articales about fishing and not 'how to'
All good but buy when there is something you want to read and just flick through the rest.

Carp mags all appear to have gone the same way as all the other angling weeklys/monthly's the publishers plan seems to be lets get a few articles together which total about 8 pages and wrap it all up nice & glossy in a 1oo page magazine with the remaining pages being simply advertising if i wanted to see loads of angling products i would simply get hold of a few manufacturers catalogues. Carp mags in my opinion are to little reading and way to much mind numbing advertising save yer money and take yer kids to McDonalds or summat.

These glossy magazine are just expensive catalogues! I buy the occasional one and it has the same faces selling the same things.
In the end, carp fishing is about simplicity in gear and confidence in your bait.

I agree with what is said above tedious etc. but i still purchase carpworld and the best one i think is carp addict but that's my opinion seeing that it's still in it's infant stage really they where going the same way you know same writers etc. but they seem to have nipped it in the bud before losing readers, i like the fact there are writers in there who do not promote this and that all the time and it's just recollections of captures and season/sessions they have encountered which makes a change from well i used this bait and this hook and this rod/reel
