The 2009 Angling Trust Cadets, Juniors, & Intermediates National
Championship took place on Saturday 4th July at Cudmore Fishery,
Newcastle-under-Lyme. Over 200 youngsters aged between 10 and 20 years
of age took part in the event all hoping to go home with a winning
medal and National winning title.
Congratulations to Smartbait Leeds, who took the winning title in the
Cadets Championship for the forth consecutive year winning gold with 25
points and a weight of 27.02kg. Tameside Fox Match were in second place
with 22 points and 28.93kg to take the silver medal. The bronze was won
by Maver Farnborough with 17 points and 18.13kg.
Paul Stead, Manager of Smartbait Leeds stated “It is a great idea to
put this event on a commercial fishery every couple of years because
these are the venues where all the youngsters are fishing these days.
The tactics for the Cadets was to fish pellet at 8 metres and 11
metres – something which our cadets are capable of fishing. The Juniors
used pellet, meat and worm two x 8 metre lines and two x 11 metre
lines. The Intermediates tended towards the same tactics. The Cadets
teams had two competitors, Jamie Stonestreet and Ryan Webb, who are new
to angling – they’d been fishing for just 4 months. Adam Thorne and
Harry Keedy took part at only 10 years of age. Young Jake Dowd has now
won four consecutive section wins and 4 gold medals for his team in the
last four years.”
Manchester team, Tameside Fox Match anglers Mathew Ebbrell and Josh
Smith put on an excellent display on the day taking first and second
positions in the Cadets National Championship – they both fished pool 6.
Mathew took the title of National Cadet Champion to win the gold
medal on peg E2 with a winning weight of 8.110kg, and winning his
section. Josh came just behind in second position to take silver on peg
D1 with 7.500kg, and also a section win. In the bronze medal position
was Ryan Webb from the winning Cadet Team classification on the day,
Smartbait Leeds on peg E5 with 7.160kg.
The Junior Championship team classification was proving that Tameside
Fox Match were pushing other teams and anglers to their limits as they
took an outstanding clear lead to take the gold medal and win with 102
points and an excellent weight of 47.00kg. The silver medal went to
Smartbait Leeds with 83 points and 29.18kg. In third place Wakefield AC
were only 3 points behind the runners up on 80 points with a weight of
26.21kg.
The Junior Championship proved to be an interesting match with a
variety of tactics used and fish caught. An excellent performance on
the day came from Harry Mottram from SAFE. He took the winning place
& title of National Junior Champion fishing from peg F11 on pool 5
with a good weight of 13.370g, and also winning his section. Runner up
Joe Cartwright of Tameside Fox Match, on peg C9 pool 3 with a weight of
11.570kg won silver, and came top in his section. Pushed into third
position, with a weight of 9.960kg on peg F4 pool 5, was Barnsley
Juniors AAS angler Luke Butterworth.
The top 8 anglers from the Junior Championship will take part in the Junior Fish O Mania event on 18th July at Cudmore Fishery.
The Intermediates had a competitive and closely fought match and was
won on weight difference by Tameside Fox Match Red with 84 points - a
gold medal weight of 62.20kg. Tom Woodruff, who captains the team, has
now collected three gold’s in the last three years. Tom netted a 12oz
skimmer near the end of the match which made all the difference to the
team results. The runner up team was Maver Farnborough Black who ended
with joint 84 points, but a weight of 56.30kg to fall into second, but
they proved to be worthy contenders and had fished consistently
throughout the match. Third place went to Barnsley Juniors AAS only two
points behind with a weight of 60.27kg.
Tom Hunt of Worksop & District AA took the winning title of the
Intermediate Champion with an excellent performance fishing Arena pool
on peg E14 with an outstanding weight of 39.250kg. The silver medal
position went to Sam Stubbington of Maver Farnborough Grey on peg A13
on Suez pool with 26.710kg, and in third place was Gavin Liversidge of
Worksop & District AA on peg D1 and a weight of 19.880kg. Tom, Sam
and Gavin all collected extra medals on the day by all winning their
sections.
It proved to be a very successful day for Tameside Fox Match who
collected medals throughout the age categories and added 9 section wins
to their collection.

match at the beginning of the year.
Firstly it is important to thank Fox who sponsored us with £1,000,

difference with all the support, help and products they supply. Over
the last 3 years we have developed and become really good anglers, with
the team winning open matches now so the standard is amazing.
The Intermediates adapted very well because low oxygen levels on lake
meant their venue had to be changed to Milo – their adaptability to new
conditions was the key. They had put a lot of time and effort into
practicing. Andy May has given some coaching to the teams, as he knows
Cudmore well. We also have a team of coaches and without their hard
work it wouldn’t be possible. Everyone in our team knows what our team
plan is and contributes to it. There is no point being involved with a
team unless you are going to improve as an angler.
The Junior match plan was to catch with 6 metre line with pellet
from the start feeding shallow, with the team catching in the last
hour. The team all caught carp shallow in the last hour and this was
part of the plan that they were practising. The cadets were maximising
the number of fish they were catching. There plan was to catch with
around a 6 metre line and a large number of small fish”.
