August North West Carp Social

Aug 31,2006 by Julian Grattidge

The second NorthWestCarp.co.uk Social took place on 12th August at Blackwood Pool. A few were that eager to fish that they turned up on the Friday night with the rest arriving on Saturday morning.

Phil set up in Peg 3, with Bet and BigTed (eventually) pitching up in pegs 4 and 6 respectively. Stig arrived just in time to see Phil doing battle with the Blackwood carp off the Top whilst Blue settled on Peg Five, Andy (whogotmelighter) in Peg 20 and Wooly on the Dam.

Phil with the Long Mirror

Phil banked a steady stream of fish during the day from baits placed up to the island and from surface fished baits in open water. Blue also got amongst the fish whilst doing a bit of stalking and bet was soon into the kippers on Peg 4.

Blue with The Parrott

With the risk of heavy rain a distinct possibility the barbeque was fired up at around five’ o’clock with Julian and Miffa preparing the food. Once all the guests had been fed and watered the ‘social’ aspect of the event got underway as the evening progressed.

Bet with a pretty mirror from peg 4

The Keyboard Warrior, aka The Doctor 46, was a late arrival, and decided to jump into Peg 2 once it had been vacated by Stig who unfortunately was unable to stay for the evening. With Food out of the way the bulk of the social took place on Phil’s swim (wonder why that was?) where the frivolities continued late into the night. Too late for some, mind, as it soon transpired it was past Blue’s bedtime and he gently settled down for a little nap on the grass next to the peg!

Mark with a nice common from the dam

Meanwhile the rest of the gang whiled away the hours discussing topics as diverse as barbequed pork chops to Oatcakes - Funny how everything was food related! It was soon time for anglers to retire to their respective bivvies and first light brought a number of sore heads and more than a few fish to those taking part. Bet ran a mission of mercy to the local oatcake shop, and once said oatcakes had been devoured and a few coffee’s drunk, it was back to the serious business of catching carp!

Two on at once for Andy!

As the social came to an end the final standings were;

Phil - 10 fish including the Long Mirror and the Parrott.
Blue - 5 fish including the Parrott
Andy - 5 fish, best to around 13lb with two on at the same time!
Wooly - 3 fish
Bet - 3 fish
Bigted - 2 fish, and taking biggest fish with a mirror over 14lb

Plans are afoot for a 2006 Winter Social (venue to be decided) and following the successful Socials so far, talks are in progress to hold a much larger ‘one-off’ social during the summer of 2007 where all those wanting to can take part on the same day.

Site Editor Julian Grattidge likes nothing more than a good natter about all things carp. Indeed, working from home, his kitchen is usually full of passing waifs, strays, and Northern-Monkey mates who just happen to be passing by. Good Job he’s got a big kettle!
