Online fishingtv Blog; Best of carp tv; Pete Castle / Maize

Oct 22,2009 by Clint Walker

Oh dear.....having really enjoyed the last programme I reviewed, I’m sorry to have to report that apart from a five minute slot, this one left me cold. The ‘blurb’ states that the watcher will ‘learn how to fish maize’; so I expected lots of hints and tips on how best to prepare and present this particular particle. However; the first 22 minutes of this show consist of Pete Castle being interviewed about his fishing, with the odd interjection from an extremely irritating narrator who is obviously reading from a script. I don’t know Pete, I’m sure he is a very nice chap who is also very competent at what he does, but this programme does not show that. It’s a bit like ‘This is your life’ without the guests to add anything. If you’re a fan of Mr. Castle, then hearing about his early fishing experiences may give you something to think about, but to anyone else, it might not be so entertaining.

There is a 40 second pinch about carp care as Pete returns a fish, but the opening 22 minutes did nothing for me. This is only 36 minutes long, so to spend 22 of them waiting for something to happen seemed a waste. It got worse before it got better. A short product plug for the Gardner spod casting glove, with that narrator (again) and Lee Jackson made me chuckle as they both seemed stunned that someone had ‘invented a glove which had only one complete finger. I’m sure someone as experienced as Lee was inwardly cringing as they discussed the ‘..elasticated velcro wrist strap...’ and attempted to make it appear exciting (Sorry Lee....).

Next up was ‘what’s in your box?’ which consisted of angler Jon Mcallister giving viewers a guided tour of his Fox tackle box! Guess what? It had hooks in it, leads, rubber beads and there was even some PVA tape in there! Mad or what? After spending 2 whole minutes discussing this, the ‘maize’ bit finally came up.

Now, in the spirit of fairness, this bit was quite good. Bryan Jarrett of the Hinders stable described the differences between corn and maize. He also gave a practical demonstration of how to properly prepare maize so it isn’t going to cause any problems to the digestive system of the carp. Hints about flavouring baits, PVA presentations and single hook baits were compared with imitation baits. It lasted for the remainder of the programme, and, if I’m honest, was the only bit I felt was worth watching.

Online fishingtv has many great episodes for the angler to learn from and enjoy; this one has slipped through the net unfortunately. Its well shot with the usual ‘nature and wildlife’ type scenes but it lacks both punch and content. It would have definitely been worth showing maize on the hook, being fished and catching fish but that just didn’t happen....

Maybe that's one for the future?
